John Hill , March 24th, 1877
On Friday, March 23rd, 1877, at 5:05 PM, Truck C responded to a fire at J. Dalton & Brother Shoddy Mill.
This two-story brick building was located at 1712 N. 9th Street. While Truck ‘C’ was responding, they encountered some rough patches of road in the area of Columbia Avenue and Mascher Street. The Truck bounced and pitched and Ladderman John Hill was thrown from the apparatus. He fell under the wheels and was run over. He was rushed to Saint Mary’s Hospital, where he died of his injuries the next day, March 24, 1877.
The fire loss amounted to $114.57.
