John H. Murray, December 19th, 1891
On Saturday, December 19th, 1891 at 6:14 AM, an alarm was received on Box 595, 53rd and Haverford Avenue for a fire in a “haystack” located at 53rd Street and Haverford Avenue. While responding to this alarm, the apparatus of Truck Co. “F” upset, and Assistant Foreman John Murray sustained severe injuries over most of his body. He died of his injuries while being transported to Presbyterian Hospital. The cause of the fire was reported as “unknown” and the fire loss, which consumed five tons of rye, was placed at $500. History will also record that the fire department had lost one of the original members who had entered the “paid” department on March 15th, 1871. Assistant Foreman Murray had been appointed Hoseman Engine 16 on that date.
