Charles Caldwell, July 12th, 1969

On Saturday, July 12, 1969 at 3:41 AM, Box 5285, Ridge and Paoli Avenue was struck for a fire in Building “G” of the three-story brick Sandra Court Apartments, located in the apartment of Miss Caroline Levitz and Miss Elaine Velonis.

Before the arrival of firemen, Mrs. Norman Kitner, 90, an invalid occupying a third-floor apartment telephoned the fire alarm room and said she was unable to leave the building unaided. Her message was relayed via fire radio to responding firemen. Upon arrival, firemen carried Mrs. Kitner, who was strapped to a chair, to safety. The fire was placed under control in twenty minutes.

Sometime during this fire, Firefighter Charles Caldwell, Platoon “C”, Group 7, Engine 35, assisted other firemen to stretch hoselines, after which he complained of chest pains. He was taken to Roxborough Memorial Hospital, Ridge Avenue and Rector Street, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 4:40 AM.
