On Wednesday, March 21st, 1877, at 9:41 AM, an alarm was struck on Box 83, 5th and Commerce Streets for a fire located in Neuberger and Co’s wholesale clothiers, a three-story brick building located at 524 Commerce Street.

Driver Patrick E. King, of Engine 22, was killed when he was thrown from and run over by the steamer on which he was riding at the intersection of 3rd and Walnut Streets.

The cause of the fire was listed as “carelessness – wood and rubbish too near heater pipe” and the fire loss amounted to $5,031.87.
