George W. Esher, July 25th, 1869

Early in the morning of Sunday July 25, 1869, the ladder truck of the Spring Garden Hose Co. was returning from a fire in West Philadelphia. As they reached a steep incline on the approach to The Wire Bridge (now the Spring Garden Bridge) the truck picked up speed and ran over an embankment. The truck struck a telegraph pole and overturned. George Esher was riding on the running board of the truck and was crushed between the truck and the pole. Six other members of the Spring Garden Hose Co. were also injured. George Esher was taken to his house on Thompson Street where he died of his injures.

George Esher was 39 years old and married. He was a brick maker by trade. He was laid torest in the Odd Fellows Cemetery
