Matthew O'Brien, Jr., April 21st, 1868
On the evening of Monday, April 20, 1868, a fire broke out on the third floor of the looking-glass frame and molding manufactory of Hale, Mosely, Goodman & Co., located at 608 Commerce Street, above Market & 6th Street. 24-year-old Matthew O’Brien was advancing up the stairs with a hose and pipe in hand. He slipped on the stairs and fell on a small piece of molding, which entered his abdomen and penetrated his bowels. Young O’Brien was taken to his home where he suffered in great agony until death took him the next day.
Matthew O’Brien’s funeral took place on Saturday, April 25 from the St. Augustine Catholic Church. It was well attended by the members of the Columbia Hose Company and the Spread Eagle Assembly, of which he was a member. He was laid to rest in the church burial ground.
