Robert A. Campbell, May 14th, 1867

While returning from a fire at Lord’s Woolen and Cotton Mill in Darby, the hose carriage of the Monroe Engine Co. ran at a high rate of speed and out of control down the hill on Darby Rd. The carriage struck a telegraph pole in the area of 44th Street and Lancaster Ave. Robert Campbell, age 24, of the Monroe Engine Co, who was riding atop the carriage, was thrown and struck the pole killing him instantly.

That day the same hill also claimed the life of William Coyle, of the Good Will Hose & Steam Fire Engine Co., as they were going up the same street in response to the Lord’s Mill fire. Coyle was trying to steady a bucking horse when he fell under the wheels of the engine and was killed instantly.
