John O'Brien, April 5th, 1867
On the night of Tuesday, March 28, 1867, a fire broke out at the Deery’s Mill. The hose carriage of the Washington Hose Co. and the steamer of the Philadelphia Hose Co. were going out Arch Street with Washington in the lead. Suddenly, between 15th & 16th Streets the Washington hose carriage stopped to pick up John O’Brien, who had fallen while pulling the rope of the carriage. The driver of Philadelphia’s steamer tried to turn the engine but the wheels skidded and ran into the carriage. The wheels of Washington’s carriage ran over O’Brien. He was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital with fractured ribs and broken legs. He died of his injuries on April 5,1867.
John O’Brien was 20 years old, not married and a machinist by trade.
