William Stotsenburg, December 14th, 1865

Shortly after six o’clock in the evening of Tuesday, December 14, 1865, fire broke out in the stables on Thirtieth Street near Arch in West Philadelphia. The stable was owned by Mr. Lafferty who had a contract with the Pennsylvania Railroad for hauling freight, which required a great number of mules. With great peril to themselves the firemen were able to save all but five mules. During the blaze William Stotesenberg of the Good Will Engine Co. collapsed and died.

William Stotesenberg was 29 years old and had recently returned from service in the 72nd Regiment, of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (The Baxter’s Fire Zouaves) during the Civil War. He was single and a brick maker by trade. He was laid to rest with much ceremony at the Mount Moriah Cemetery.
