Joseph Heustis, December 17th, 1861
Sometime in November 1860, the 25-year-old Joseph Heustis Jr. was enroute, with his company, to a fire at the Hall & Boardman’s establishment on Arch Street below Third Street. He became caught between the hose carriage and the wood cart and was crushed. He received severe internal injuries, and lingered until December 17, 1861 when he succumbed to his injuries.
On Sunday, December 22, 1861, Joseph Heustis Jr. was laid to rest with the honors fitting a member of the Good Will Steam Fire Engine Company.
