Samuel Kessler, November 21st, 1859
On the morning of Monday November 21, 1859, fire broke out in the store of Mr. Hagy, located at Ninth and Market Streets. During the blaze a terrible accident occurred. The steamer of the Vigilant Fire Company ran over two men as they were standing in front of the flaming building. One of them, a young man, escaped the wheels and was not seriously injured. The other man, Mr. Samuel Kessler who was a member of the Schuylkill Hose Company, was struck and the wheels passed over his body. Mr. Kessler was taken to a nearby house. After a short time, he was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital, but he died before reaching the Hospital. His body was taken to his home at 232 Juniper Street, near Locust Street. The coroner held an inquest later that day and declared that Mr. Kessler’s death was an accident.
Samuel Kessler’s funeral took place on Thursday November 24, at 2:00 p.m. (Thanksgiving Day). It was attended by members of the Schuylkill Hose Company, of which he had been a member for 30years. Also attending were members of the Vigilant and Good Will Engine Companies. He was laid to rest at the Philanthropic Cemetery.
Samuel Kessler was 60 years old and the sexton of the West Arch Street Church, at Eighteenth and Arch Streets. He left his wife and family
