Tracy Champion, January 28th, 2006

On Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 02:31 AM, Box 1233 55th Street & Lancaster Avenue was struck for a fire at 1721 N. 55th Street. Engine 54 responded first in. Upon arrival, Engine 54’s Captain reported to FCC they had heavy smoke in the rear of a two and three story 16’ x 55’ dwelling. He put 1 & 1 in service.

Engine 54 stretched 1 3/4” water line to the rear. They had to scale a 6’ high fence to gain access to the rear and begin to extinguish the fire. Battalion 11 arrived and put 2 & 2 in service. Deputy 1 put the fire under control at 03:04.

At approximately 04:30 while engaged in wetting down the first-floor rear, Firefighter Champion collapsed. The Captain notified FCC that there was a firefighter having a seizure and requested a medic unit. Firefighter Champion was moved to the outside and CPR was started.

Medic 23 arrived on location and transported Firefighter Champion to Lankenau Hospital with CPR continuing en route. After efforts to revive him at the ER were not successful, Firefighter Champion was pronounced dead.

Firefighter Tracy Champion was the 285th firefighter to die in the line of duty for the Philadelphia Fire Department.
