Samuel H. Carr, July 5th, 1858
On Monday, June 28, 1858, a fire broke out at the Allegheny House located on Market Street just above Eighth Street. There were rumors that the Shiffler Hose Co. would be attacked this night. The rumors were so strong that a large force of Police were sent to the scene to stop any disturbance. As the Shiffler Hose Company responded to this fire the rumors became fact. Just as the Shiffler Hose Company turned onto Eighth Street from Market, a volley of gun fire was aimed at the members by the Moyamensing Hose Company (who had been hiding in the shadows). One of those shots hit a 25-year-old member of the Shiffler in the head. Samuel Carr fell to the pavement. Five other members of the Shiffler were seriously wounded during the attack. The newspapers reported that Carr was killed instantly. These reports were in error. In fact, the young Carr lingered until July 5, when he succumbed to the wound.
No one was ever charged with his murder.
