David B. Douglass, November 8th, 1854
Due to repeated exposure while responding to fires, David B. Douglass, a member of the Columbia Hose Company, developed pulmonary heart disease and passed away on the morning of November 8, 1854. On November 28, 1854, the trustees of the Philadelphia Association for the Relief of Disabled Firemen officially attributed his death to these firefighting exposures. In recognition of his service, the Association provided his widow with $20 in relief and covered $28.50 in funeral expenses.
Fireman Douglass was buried in the Association’s vault and monument located in Monument Cemetery.
