Ephraim Skellinger, May 23rd, 1836
On the evening of May 23, 1836, the Southwark Hose Company, manned by youths, raced up Second Street toward a raging fire on Ridge Rd. In the words of the Southwark, when they crossed Pine Street the carriage of the Hope Hose Company was at its door, and its rope was up Second Street. At this point, it is not clear what happened, but five members on the rope of the Southwark Hose carriage stumbled and fell when the tongue of the hosecart veered to the left. Ephraim Skellinger was thrown under the front wheel of the carriage and died within twenty minutes.
Ephraim Skellinger was eighteen years old, an apprentice to Mr. Samuel Bayn and was survived by his mother.
