Edward Funk, May 22nd, 1836
At 8:00 a.m. on the morning of May 22, 1836, an alarm was sounded for a fire at 56 South Front St. It was the drug warehouse of N. Lenning & Company. At about 12:00 p.m. the roof collapsed taking with it the 4th and 3rd floors, trapping the men working on the 2nd floor. George Bright was rescued shortly after the collapse. But Edward Funk, 18 years old, could not be located for some time. By the time he was found, it was too late. Both men were members of the Northern Liberty Fire Company.
