John O'Connor, January 13th, 1818

At about 2:00 am on the extremely cold morning of January 13, 1818 a fire broke out at the corner of Christian Street and Passyunk Road. The fire would consume three dwellings. At about 3:00 am, after the flames were extinguished, a stack of chimneys came crashing down on several firemen. Among them was John O’Connor of the Southwark Hose Company. He was killed instantly by the mass of bricks. The other men recovered from their injuries.

The funeral of the 21-year-old son of Captain Christopher O’Connor, the quarantine master of the Philadelphia ports, was attended by the members of the Southwark Hose Co., Hibernia Fire Co., Delaware Fire Co., Pennsylvania Fire Co., Phoenix Hose Co., Niagara Hose Co., Niagara Fire Co., and the Fellowship Fire Co.
