Warren MacDonald, January 15th, 1973

On Sunday, January 14, 1973 at 11:57 PM, Engine 65 responded to Box 7514, Conshohocken and Cranston Roads, for a fire located at 3901 Conshohocken Road. The fire was located in the first-floor bedroom of Apartment No. 169, West Village, Lobby 7, occupied by Rosemarie Valentine.

Upon arrival on the firegrounds, members of Engine 65 assisted Engine 54 in stretching a booster line about 200 feet to the “seat” of the fire. Members of Engine 65 were then ordered to stretch an inch and a half line for service.

Shortly thereafter, they were ordered to “take up” and prepare to return to service. While members of Engine 65 were replacing the line onto the apparatus, Firefighter Warren MacDonald, Platoon “B”, Ladder 20 (detailed to Engine 65), collapsed against the apparatus.

Firefighter Rhuberg went to his aid immediately and Firefighter Heiden performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Firefighter Lancaster applied an external heart massage.

Rescue 16 arrived and took Firefighter MacDonald to the West Park Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Bushka at 1:00 AM on January 15, 1973.

The cause of the fire was determined to be either “smoking in bed” or “defective electric blanket.” The fire was confined to the bedroom.
