Charles Douglas, January 28th, 1933
On Saturday, January 28, 1933 at 4:42 AM, an alarm was sounded on Box 43, Front & Vine Streets, for a fire at the Penn Paper Stock Company, a five-story brick warehouse located at the southwest corner of Front and New Streets, 238-40 N. Front Street.
While operating at this fire, Battalion Chief Charles Douglas of the 4th Battalion was killed when he lost his way in the smoke-filled building and fell into a 35-foot paper waste shaft.
