Carl Hiller, November 13th, 1964

On Thursday, November 5, 1964 at 2:48 AM, Platoon “C” of Engine 8 responded to Box 2151, 5th Street and Fairmount Avenue for a fire located in two 3.5-story vacant dwellings located at 622 and 620 N. 6th Street.

The fire was located in the upper floors of both buildings. Engine 8’s assignment was to attack the fire which was located in the loft of 620 N. 6th Street. This fire proved to be very hot and smoky, and time and time again firemen were driven back down the stairway which led to the loft.

With Firefighter Hiller leading the way, members of Engine 8 attempted to extinguish the fire, only to be driven back. Finally, the fire was extinguished, but not until it had been paid for at a high price. By his untiring efforts, Fireman Hiller had exhausted himself beyond the point of endurance.

He died just eight days later on November 13, 1964.
