Alfred W. Balkie, February 27th, 1965

On Saturday, February 27, 1965 at 12:56 AM, Platoon “A” of Engine 61 responded to a Local Alarm of fire with Ladder 22 and Battalion Chief George Chase of the 2nd Battalion.

The fire was located in the one- and two-story dry-cleaning plant occupied by the Sonny Cleaners and Dyers, 4902-06 Rising Sun Avenue and was owned by Richard D. Mukalian Jr. Box 985, Rising Sun and the Roosevelt Boulevard was pulled at 1:06 PM for additional help. While assisting his company on this fire, Firefighter Alfred Balkie of Engine 61 collapsed. He was treated on the fireground by Rescue 2 and taken to Albert Einstein Hospital, Northern Division, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
