On Saturday, July 12, 1919 at 12:19 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 1334, American and Green Streets for a fire in the Pottash Brothers Burlap Bag Company, 609-11-13 N. American Street.

Sometime during this fire, Ladderman Harry LaGrand of Truck 2, Hoseman Thomas Innes of Engine 13, Hoseman John J. Green of Engine 21, Lieutenant Thomas Kelly of Engine 21, Hoseman Charles Zorr of Pipeline 3 (Detailed to Engine 21), and Captain Albert Stevenson of Fireboat 1 (Detailed Acting Battalion Chief, 2nd Battalion) were killed when the front of the building collapsed and buried them beneath the rubble.

The fire reached four alarms and the fire loss amounted to $100,000.
