Vincent Rotondo, December 29th, 1970
On Monday, December 28, 1970 at 2:04 PM, Platoon “A” of Engine 22, Ladder 31, and Battalion 13 responded to a Local Alarm for a fire in a barn located in a cornfield on Mechanicsville Road, about 1500 feet north of Dunks Ferry Road.
The barn, a 2 ½ story building, was set back off Mechanicsville Road about 200 feet and was fully involved in fire upon arrival. Box 7568, Dunks Ferry Road and Dunks Ferry Place was received at 2:05 PM.
Captain Vincent Rotondo, Engine Co. 38, who was Acting Battalion 13 at the time, arrived on the fireground at approximately 2:10 PM.
Sometime after the fire was placed under control, Captain Rotondo returned to his car and told his aide, Firefighter George Diamond that he felt ill. He placed Lieutenant Anthony Salamone, Ladder 31 in charge of the remaining fire and then ordered Firefighter Diamond to take him to Engine 18's station.
Soon after entering the car, Captain Rotondo collapsed. Upon arrival at Engine 18, Battalion Chief William Hebden applied the resuscitator and a rescue unit was called.
Rescue 6 from Bustleton and Bowler responded at 3:09 PM, treated him, and then took, Captain Rotondo to Nazareth Hospital, where they arrived at approximately 3:20 PM. He was detained and placed under medical treatment.
At approximately 5:05 AM, the next day, December 29, 1970 Captain Rotondo died of his injuries.
