Thomas H. Ahlers, November 16th, 1962

On Friday, November 16, 1962 at 12:17 PM, Engine Co. 71, Ladder Co. 28, and Battalion Chief 12 responded to a local alarm for a fire in the basement of a two-story brick beauty parlor and apartment located at 6392 Castor Avenue and operated by Edward Klarin. Before the arrival of the firemen, several dozen women and employees had been driven from the building by the smoke.

At 12:25 PM, Box 6283, Levick Street and Castor Avenue was struck for additional help.

While assisting his company fight this fire, which proved to be very smoky, Firefighter Thomas H. Ahlers of Engine 71 was stricken in the basement.

Firefighter Ahlers was assisted to the pavement by Firefighter George Taylor, whereupon he collapsed. He was treated by Rescue 12, removed to the Frankford Hospital, and pronounced dead.

At approximately 2:40 PM, the following message was announced over the Public Address system to all fire stations: “To all Fire Personnel – Regret to announce the passing of Firefighter Thomas Ahlers, Engine 71, at Box 6283 Castor and Levick.
