On Thursday, February 2nd, 1888 at 5:19 AM, a local alarm was sounded for a fire at 17-19 S. 6th Street, a five-story brick building occupied by Busch and Company, Book Binders, Wanamaker & Company, Clothiers, and others. Box 176 was struck at 5:21 AM.

While working with his company on this very smoky fire, Hoseman Robert Killen, of Chemical 2, was overcome with smoke and suffocated to death.

Engine 22, Chemical 2, Truck “D”, and Assistant Engineer Dunlap responded. The fire loss amounted to $50,260.50.
