Phillip Barr, March 2nd, 1884

On Thursday, February 28th, 1884, at 10:30 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 329, Delaware Avenue and Market Streets for a fire in Coons and Brothers Commission House, a 4-story brick building located at 29 S. Water Street, and E. Green & Company Wool Warehouse, 31 & 31 S Water Street. While working at this fire, Hoseman Phillip Barr, of Engine 11, was seriously injured when he fell from a roof. Two days later, on March 2nd 1884, he died of his injuries. Hoseman Barr had a short career of less than three months. The cause of the fire was recorded as “unknown” and the fire loss amounted to $19,726.39.
