On Monday, May 2nd, 1881, at 10:00 PM, Truck “E” responded to Box 93, 24th Street and Fairmount Avenue, for a fire located in the three-story stone woolen mill occupied by Atkinson and Company, 612 N. 24th Street.

During the fire, Ladderman Oliver Exley, a member of Truck “E” was injured, and on May 12th, 1881, just 10 days later, died from a congestion of the spine.

The cause of the fire was recorded as “unknown” and the total fire loss amounted to $12,604.47.
