Michael Doyle , August 11th, 1895

On August 11, 1895 at 8:33 AM Box 39, at 8th and Callowhill Streets, was struck for a fire at 412 Franklin Street. The building was occupied by the Baily Paper Box factory. Ladderman Michael Doyle was injured and died that night. The fire reached 4 alarms.

Ladderman Michael Doyle of Truck “I” was killed when his legs and the lower part of his body was crushed after the ladders on the truck shifted while responding to the fire.

His injury was described a bit differently in the Coroners’ Jury Report. "While Truck “I” was preparing to respond, Ladderman Doyle was in the doorway putting on his boots. The horses jumped forward unexpectedly. Ladderman Doyle tried to jump out of the way but was caught under the left front wheel. He was taken to Hahnemann Hospital where it was found that he had internal injuries and his leg was so badly broken that it had to be amputated. To spite the efforts of the doctors, Michael Doyle died during the night."
