Leonard W. Garrett, March 19th, 1955
On Saturday, March 19, 1955 at 6:15 AM, Platoon “A” of Engine 44 responded to a Local Alarm at 3716 Aspen Street, along with Ladder Co. 6 and Battalion Chief Comerford of the 11th Battalion.
The fire was located in the rear shed of a two-story brick dwelling occupied by Lollie May Ryant. After assisting his company extinguish the fire with the 1” W.L., and while removing debris to the rear yard, Fireman Leonard W. Garrett of Engine 44 collapsed and was immediately removed to the Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 6:50 AM.
On this fire, Engine 44 performed 48 minutes “fire duty” before returning to the station.
