Our fallen hero

On Saturday, September 18, 1926 at 4:47 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 1348, 20^th and Indiana, for a fire at Freihofer’s Bakery, 20^th Street and Indiana Avenue.

While operating at this fire, Hoseman John J. Sykes and Captain Joseph G. Jones, both of Engine 50, were killed by falling walls caused by a boiler explosion.

The fire reached five alarms and the fire loss amounted to $500,000.
