Joseph Dugan , November 8th, 1943

On Sunday, March 8, 1942, Fire Boat 2, the Rudolph Blankenburg, responded to a report of a fire onboard a cargo ship anchored in the Delaware River.

Firemen found a fire in the hold of the ship. There was no access to the space which was on fire. Fireman Dugan tied a rope around his waist and was lowered in to the hold.

After the fire was extinguished Firefighter Dugan was hoisted back out. The rope tied tightly around his waist, caused sever internal injuries.

Firefighter Dugan went to the hospital for treatment and never returned to work. He died of complications of this injury on November 8, 1943, eighteen months after the injury.
