William Stagart, April 18th, 1896

On Saturday, April 18, 1896 at 4:32 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 416, 32nd and Market Streets (Pennsylvania Railroad Private Box), for a fire in the Pennsylvania Railroad car shed.

During the three-alarm fire a wall collapsed injuring more than a dozen men and killing Assistant Engineer Stagart. He suffered a fractured skull, internal injuries and severe burns. He died shortly after arriving at Presbyterian Hospital.

In his career history, you will note that Stagart is listed as "Elected Assistant Engineer." In the early days of the Fire Department, the rank of Assistant Engineer (Battalion Chief today) was elected by the Board of Fire Commissioners. The board was made up of politicians and connected businessmen. To become an Assistant Engineer, on top of being qualified, a candidate had to be politically connected.
