John McAllister, June 17th, 1969
On Tuesday, June 17, 1969 at 9:55 AM, Engine 13, Ladder 1, and Battalion 4 responded to “10th & Poplar Streets – A catwalk along the railroad."
On arrival, members of Engine 13 and Ladder 1 investigated 9th and Poplar, but could not locate any fire. Engine 13 made themselves available at 10:05 AM. Engine 13 then proceeded south on 9th Street, en route back to the station.
At approximately 10:07 AM, at an area just below Poplar Street, Firefighter John McAllister of Engine 13, who was riding in the seat area to the rear of the driver and officer, lost his balance when his running coat caught on a parked car.
He fell from the apparatus, sustained head injuries, and was immediately taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Other members of Engine 13 and Ladder 1 were taken to Philadelphia General Hospital, via Rescue 13, where they were treated for shock.
