John Johnson , December 27th, 1886

On Monday, December 27th, 1886 at 11:00 AM, an alarm was struck on Box 223, 7th & Chestnut Streets for a fire at Temple Theater, located at 717-19-21 Chestnut Street, a three-story granite building.

A second alarm was struck at 11:30 AM. Fire spread to six other buildings on Chestnut Street, one building on 7th Street, and seven additional buildings on Jayne Street.

Ladderman John Johnson of Truck “B” and Hoseman John Gibson of Engine 4, were both killed after becoming trapped beneath falling walls.

The cause of this fire was recorded as “electric light” and the fire loss amounted to $250,139.

Ladderman Johnson was appointed on November 30th, 1886 and died in the line of duty on December 27th, 1886. He had been a member of the fire department for only 27 days.
