John J. Sykes, September 18th, 1926

On Saturday, September 18, 1926 at 4:47 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 1348, 20th and Indiana, for a fire at Freihofer’s Bakery, 20th Street and Indiana Avenue.

While operating at this fire, Hoseman John J. Sykes and Captain Joseph G. Jones, both of Engine 50, were killed by falling walls caused by a boiler explosion. The fire reached five alarms and the fire loss amounted to $500,000.
