John F. Weres, October 25th, 1965
On Monday, October 25, 1965 at 6:18 PM, Platoon “B” of Engine 13 responded to a Local Alarm for a fire in a vacant 3 story grocery store and dwelling located at 1721 Ridge Avenue. Box 1536, 17th and Ridge Avenue was pulled for additional help. Ladder 7 was among the companies answering the alarm.
At approximately 6:26 PM, Ladder 7 was proceeding west on Girard Avenue, and when Firefighter John Willets, the driver of the apparatus, turned the ladder south onto 17th Street, the right rear fender struck a tree which leaned slightly into the street.
Firefighter John F. Weres of Ladder 7, who was riding on the right side of Firefighter Michael McGinn, Tillerman of the apparatus, was caught between the truck and the tree. He received severe injuries to his left leg and abdominal region.
Firefighter Weres was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he died of his injuries at 8:20 PM.
