John F. Ryder, July 19th, 1895
On Friday, July 19, 1895, at 11:00 AM, an alarm was sounded on Box 956, 39th Street and Lancaster Avenue, for a fire at the Stable of Willis Ogden located at 3852 Lancaster Avenue. The fire later spread to the stable of Jesse Jones located at 3850 Lancaster Avenue.
While responding to the fire, Hoseman John F. Ryder of Engine 18 was thrown from the hose cart on which he was riding. His neck was broken, and he died from his injuries.
