On Sunday, November 24th, 1889 at 3:36 AM, an alarm was sounded on Box 91, 2nd & Market Streets for a fire at Janney and Andrews’ wholesale grocery, a six-story brick building located at 121 and 123 Market Street.

Hoseman James McCuen, of Engine 4, was killed when he became trapped beneath a falling wall.

A second alarm was sounded at 5:12 AM. The cause of the fire was recorded as “unknown” and the fire loss was set at $238,499.00
