On Wednesday, December 16, 1903 at 11:20 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 1594, Passyunk Avenue and Federal Streets for a fire located at 1202 S. 8th Street, a three-story brick retail dry goods store owned and operated by G. Feeney. The fire spread to 1204 S. 8th Street; a building occupied by G. Butcher.
While responding to the alarm, Truck 5 collided with an awning pole at 8th & Christian Streets. In this accident, Ladderman James M. Kelly of Truck 5 received contusions of the body, and Ladderman Frederick Schilling of Truck 5 was also injured. They were taken to the Medical Chirurgical Hospital. Ladderman Kelly remained off duty until March 30, 1905, more than one year later, when he died of his injuries.
The fire loss was set at $4,225 and the cause of the fire was listed as “matches”
