James Ennis , August 19th, 1944

On Friday, August 18, 1944 at 5:39 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 759, 29th and York Streets for a fire located in a dwelling occupied by Ms. Ruth Sheppard, 2914 Arizona Street.

While responding, Truck 14 was turning north off of Ridge Avenue and onto 29th Street when they struck a soda truck and an automobile on the west side of 29th Street.

Ladderman James Ennis of Truck 14, who was tillering the truck, was hurled to the street and sustained a fractured skull. One other fireman was also injured.

Ladderman Ennis was taken to the Women’s Homeopathic Hospital where he died the next day, August 19, 1944.
