Harry Wolfrom, July 21st, 1920

On Wednesday, July 21, 1920 at 10:28 AM, an alarm was sounded on Box 1697, 17th and Chestnut Streets, for a fire in the Fritz and LaRue Oriental Rug Store, a five-story building located at 1615 Chestnut Street.

While operating at this fire, Hoseman Harry Wolfrom of Engine 43 and Captain Edward Schwartzkopf of Engine 26 (Acting Battalion Chief, 2nd Battalion) were killed when the fly ladder of Truck 9’s main ladder broke and hurled them to their death.

This tragic accident happened after they had made several spectacular rescues of occupants of the building.

The fire reached three alarms and the fire loss was over $750,000.
