George Lehman , January 27th, 1901
On Thursday, January 24, 1901, Hoseman George Lehman, of Engine 22, was detailed to Chemical 3. At 7:36 pm Chemical 3 responded to Box 1244 for a fire at the Century Storage and Warehouse Company. This four-story brick building was located at the northeast corner of 11th and Fitzwater Streets.
While responding, Chemical 3 collided with a trolley car at 4th & Catharine Streets. The collision threw men from the wagon. Most sustained minor injuries. The Chemical wagon sustained minor damage. The men re-took their places on the wagon and continued on their way to the fire. As Chemical 3 was turning the corner at 11th & Catharine Streets, the ladder broke loose and fell to the street. Hoseman Lehman also fell from the truck with the ladder. The wheels of the wagon ran over Lehman causing grave injuries. He was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital. Three days later he died of his injuries (January 27, 1901).
An interesting note: Hoseman George Lehman had been a member of the Fire Department for only 3 months.
The building was owned by E. March, and the fire loss was listed as $487.
