On Thursday, August 2nd, 1894 at 4:45 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 284, 6th & Master Streets for a fire in the John A. Cronin & Company Wool Mill and J. O’Hara’s Carpet Cleaners – a 4 story brick building located at the NWC of Randolph and Jefferson Streets.
Both Hoseman George Geissel of Engine 21 and Ladderman George Dickel of Truck “C” were killed when the floor on which they were working gave way – plunging them downwards and trapping them in a mass of rubble and debris.
The fire reached 3 alarms and the loss amounted to $56,334.
Hoseman Geissel had over 22 years of service in the Philadelphia Fire Department and had served all his time at Engine 21.
