George F. Harbauer, July 4th, 1887

On Monday, July 4th, 1887 at 8:10 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 612, 8th & Chestnut Streets for a fire at the S.M. Wanamaker Store, a four-story building located at 818-820 Chestnut Street.

Ladderman George Harbauer, of Truck “D” was killed while responding, when he was thrown from and ran over by the truck on which he was riding.

The cause of the alarm was recorded as “rubbish in cellar” and the fire loss amounted to $6,958.51.

Ladderman Harbauer had been a member of the fire department for just about three months.
