Frank W. Martin , March 7th, 1942
On Thursday, March 5, 1942 at 4:11 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 3216 for a fire at the upper end of Nixon Street in Manayunk, at the Container Corporation of America. The fire was located in a scrap paper shed.
The shed was a metal structure 300’ X 150’ and stood 56’ high, and contained 50,000 tons of waste paper in bails. The fire was a stubborn deep-seated fire. A second alarm was requested at 4:33 pm. After the fire, Engine 12 was returned to its station a few blocks away. While transiting to the station Hoseman Frank Martin fell from the back step of the engine and struck his head fracturing his skull.
Hoseman Martin died of his injuries on March 7, 1942, just two days later.
