Frank R. Vogenberg, June 26th, 1949

On Sunday, June 26, 1949 at 6:31 AM, Platoon “B” of Engine 27 responded to a Local Alarm for a fire in the home of Cornelius Hood, 2329 N. Opal Street. Before the arrival of Engine 27, Box 1394, 20th and Dauphin was struck.

During the fire, Hoseman Frank R. Vogenberg of Engine 45 was at the rear of Engine 45’s apparatus uncoupling hose. About that time, Engine 27’s transmission shifted from a pumping to a mobile position, automatically sending the apparatus forward.

Hoseman Vogenberg became caught between the two fire trucks and was seriously injured. He suffered from shock, fractures of both legs, a shattered pelvis, and other internal injuries.

Hoseman Vogenberg died at Women’s Homeopathic Hospital at 9:15 AM, just two hours after the strange and unusual accident took place.

It may be interesting to note that when Engine 45 was struck by Engine 27, it was pushed forward so hard that it struck Battalion Chief Wayne Peterman’s car, and turned the car completely around from a north to a south direction.

Ironically as it may seem, Hoseman Vogenberg was scheduled to begin his annual two-week vacation period at 8:00 AM that morning, about an hour and a half after this tragedy occurred.
