On Wednesday, March 26th, 1873, at 12:15 PM, an alarm sounded on Box 1, The State House, for a fire in the Osmand and Company Hat Factory, a three-story brick building located at No. 3 Kinsley Place, in the vicinity of 6th and Spruce Streets.

Hoseman Frank Mooney of Engine 4 sustained severe head injuries while battling the blaze and died as a result.

The cause of the fire was an “overheated stove” and the fire loss was set at $3,847.75.
