Frank J. Young, November 30th, 1951

On Friday, November 30, 1951 at 6:26 PM, an alarm was sounded on Box 1597, 5th Below Lombard, for a fire in Sol Dolgien’s fur shop and apartment, a three-story building located at 522 S. 5th Street.

Captain Frank J. Young, who was the Acting Battalion Chief in the 2nd Battalion at the time, collapsed from smoke inhalation while on scene at this fire.

Captain Young was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

As strange as it may seem, Captain Young was the third Captain who was “acting” in Battalion 2, and was killed while in the performance of his duties. The other two Captain’s who met a similar fate were Captain Albert Stevenson of Fireboat 1, who was killed in the Pottash Bros. fire on July 12, 1919, and Captain Edward Schwartzkopf of Engine 26, who was killed in the Fritz and LaRue Rug store fire on July 21, 1920.
