Francis Carlin, July 21st, 1875

On Wednesday, July 21st, 1875, Ladderman Francis (James) Carlin, of Truck ‘A’, was on the Steam Yacht "George W. Hyde" which was operating on the Schuylkill River. He fell overboard and drowned. His body was recovered the next day downriver at Point Breeze.

New evidence has come to light showing that Ladderman Carlin was off duty at the time of his death. As such he is not considered a line-of-duty death. Due to the fact that FF Carlin's name is engraved on our LODD wall, we have decided to leave this entry in place to avoid any confusion.

There is also some confusion about Ladderman Carlin’s first name. Our personal journal has his first name as James. The newspaper article detailing his death also has his name as James. The Line of Duty Death log maintained at the museum, listed his name as Francis. We believe this may be an error.
