Francis Burke, December 7th, 1879

On Monday, December 1st, 1879, at 10:58 AM, an alarm was sounded on Box 1 at the State House, for a fire in Megargee Brothers five story brick paper warehouse at 18-20 S. 6th Street, and #9 and #11 Decatur Street. Ladderman Francis Burke, of Truck “B” while driving the fuel wagon to the fire was accidentally thrown and sustained serious injuries when he was run over by the wagon at 4th and Green Streets. Six days later, on December 7th, 1879, Ladderman Burke died from these injuries.

The four-alarm fire loss amounted to $209,800.40 and the cause was listed as “unknown”.
